We are almost in Dover (we got wifi! :-))! We will most likely be arriving at ashcombe for the scheduled arrival time. Bis gleich!

Coach C update via email

Miss Trotman has sent this update via email and we are loading it up to the blog from school.

Wednesday was spectacular in many ways, and especially with the weather. The day started bright and sunny but within an hour, rain was coming down in sheets. To the backdrop of thunder and lightning, rain-macs were hastily produced in 2 designs using bin bags,  hailstones turned the roads icy and white like snow, and finally the sun came back hotter than any other day in the week and the sun-cream police were out in force again!

The chair lift was closed due to adverse weather so we went to German Lidl instead. The students had to find a new German word from their mini shopping experience. Then the programme resumed as we headed off to St Goar, to see the cuckoo clock capital of the world and to see Burg Rheinfels, a castle spanning 15 football pitches in size. The students loved exploring the mine caves and tunnels and hearing stories of the slaughterhouse, dungeons and how they poured ‘biological waste’ over the ramparts to repel the enemy!

The afternoon river cruise in the blazing sunshine was a lovely way to end the day’s sightseeing but it was not the end of the day yet.  After dinner, 100 students assembled along the banks of the Rhein for the epic champion of champions games event between coach C and D. Still not clear who claimed victory but good fun was had by all.

Beautiful day in St Goar and Boppard today. Coach A enjoyed going up the chair lift, a guided tour through Burg Rheinfels and a cruise tour along the river Rhine.

We probably won't be able to update tomorrow, but if you don't hear anything we will be arriving in Dorking on time.

Hello from Boppard

Day Three: another brilliant day with the children here in Germany.  After a good night’s sleep and a big breakfast, group D headed for Bacharach where we met with the boat for the Rhine river cruise. There was a little downpour, however all the children were inside and dry and still managed to get a good view of the Rhine!

At St Goar we disembarked and took the town train up the hill to Burg Rheinfels.  The sun came out and the group had a great guided tour of the castle with stunning views of the Rhine from the ramparts as well a trip underground in the caves.  We took lunch in the grounds before walking back down the hill.  The children had free time to walk round the town and take in a little shopping and a lot of ice-cream!

Then a short coach ride down the road to Boppard and we took the chairlift to the top of the hill.  We enjoyed incredible views of the Rhine valley including the largest ox bow (little geography cross curricular reference there) on the river.  Unfortunately the stunning weather was broken by quite a downpour, we all got a tad wet to say the least!  However we were quickly back on the bus, Darren our driver whacked up the heat and we were warm in no time!

coach A war in St Goar und Rüdesheim

After a rainy start to the day, we had a fairly sunny and enjoyable day in Rüdesheim!

We have been particulary impressed with students using their German language skills as much as possible and even ordering ice cream in German!

Hello from Coach B

Coach B has had internet connection issues! Everything is fine and we're in Koblenz.  It's unlikely we'll be in areas with good connection any time soon, so no news is good news.  See you on Friday

[coach A] Unser Ausflug zum Deutschen Eck, Burg Eltz und Cochem

Natalia, Frankie, Josie und Freya S. berichten:

Today we went on a cable car over the river and after that we went to a castle - it was amazing! We enjoyed going in the cable car, because the view was fantastic. It was a bit frightening when we looked down though! The castle was called Burg Eltz and we went on a tour and the tour guide was really funny. We then went to Cochem to explore the town. We spent the evening at the playground. It was really fun! Deutschland ist super!!!

After a long journey, we (coach A) have arrived safely in Koblenz.

Students have shown excellent behaviour, enjoyed their dinner at the hotel and are now looking forward to visiting Koblenz and Burg Eltz tomorrow!

Year 7 are very excited to go to Germany in a week. We aim to share some text and photos to give you a flavour of what the groups are doing during the week.  Obviously this is very dependent on practicalities such as staff time and mobile / wifi connections, and these conditions may vary from coach to coach, so we would ask readers to be patient and understanding if there are gaps!
